International Light Art Biennial 2015 – 2026
EVI LICHTUNGEN is a biennial light art festival. It is a decentralized exhibition project in public spaces in the city of Hildesheim. It features site-specific works in dialogue with urban architecture, cultural-historical locations, and contemporary art and culture institutions. The founding editions in 2015 and 2018 were co-directed by Bettina Pelz and Klaus Wilhelm. Alice Hinrichs and Klaus Wilhelm co-curated the editions in 2020 and 2022. Since 2023, Lena Weisner and Klaus Wilhelm have co-curated the light art biennial.
EVI LICHTUNGEN takes place over four evenings in late January and is conceived as a light art parcours spanning multiple sites in the inner city and surrounding districts. International artists and collectives work with projections, light sculptures, video, and immersive environments, using light both as material and as medium to interact with urban situations.
EVI LICHTUNGEN is hosted by the association Internationale Kunstprojekte Hildesheim e.V. in cooperation with Hildesheim Marketing. The local energy supplier EVI Energieversorgung Hildesheim is the main sponsor, enabling free admission and positioning the event as both a cultural highlight and an urban development impulse.
Since its early editions in 2018 and 2020, the biennial attracted tens of thousands of visitors and presented around 19–20 works per edition across roughly 15 sites. The sixth edition is scheduled for 22–25 January 2026.
